Things on Taking It Global have changed since I registered on the website a couple of years ago! I'm glad to see that the website is marketed as a social networking tool for those who want to effect positive change in this world.

Although I have a personal journal on LiveJournal.com, I will use this blog on TIG to post updates on initiatives I'll be taking on in the next year. I'll also use this blog to keep track of the commitments I've made :) .

We're past the midpoint of August already which means that school is around the corner... and with that, Orientation! The first week of September is usually a busy week for me because I would assist in preparing for promotions for student groups I'm involved with.

This year is no different! Continuing my activities with my campus group, Teachers Without Borders - U of T Chapter, I hope to see some plans for awesome initiatives to their completion. More on those plans as soon as I map them out with my colleagues :) !

I hope to make entries here often as it would be a good indication of action!

I would like to be treated to these awesome cupcakes on my birthday!

It was Sarah's birthday yesterday (not me, I have a friend with the same name).
I was not able to make it to her birthday gathering last night so after class yesterday, I went out to get some Cold Stone Creamery ice cream cupcakes (6 for $11.99) and dropped them off at her store.  She couldn't find the time to get down to the nearest Cold Stone ever since she heard that some locations opened up in the GTA, so I thought I'd bring some Cold Stone to her - in the most compact and festive way possible :) .

We spent an hour catching up, eating the cupcakes and sharing some chicken biryani from the Indian restaurant next door (oh, have I mentioned that I'm limiting meat eating to one 24-hour period a week? I've had some meat over the last 24 hours... I have to keep watch).

The cupcakes were really good! Each cupcake is made up of a chocolate shell which has a layer of birthday cake, topped with a layer of ice cream, which is topped by frosting and either sprinkles, chocolate rolls, or an Oreo.

As far as I know, the only downtown location is at the Bay+Bloor Tim Hortons.

How to rescue a trapped Campus Card (TCard) from a UPOS Terminal

Do you recognize this terminal?

When left unattended with your cash card still in the slot, the terminal sounds off with nonstop beeping.

I was at the Robarts Stacks on the 1*th floor earlier tonight when I heard nonstop beeping (it gets annoying when you're in the libary >_<) coming from a UPOS Terminal (pictured above) on one of the photocopiers. I thought someone left their TCard in one of the terminals but when I turned to the direction of the beeping, I saw a man trying to get his TCard out of the terminal, but with no luck.

Wanting to hush up the beeping, I went to the photocopier area and tried to assist the man in getting his TCard out.  I tried yanking it out -- of course, that was probably his first resort.  The man then unplugged the photocopier but the terminal did not release the card.

I noticed that there was a small metal latch in the card slot.  Thinking back on my novice door-opening techniques, I pulled out my TCard and tried to pry the latch up by sticking my card in the slot.

It worked!  How nice it was to see the man's face in relief :) .

So, the next time you have to deal with trapped cash cards, get another piece of your plastics out!

Glad I got the call.

After the crunch time ends, I'll be spending my Mondays ESL tutoring a newcomer to Canada from the Caribbean.
I think this is one of those things that will help me pass time in August and months after.
